The Dangers Of a Size Zero Fixation

When Kareena Kapoor slimmed down to a size zero for a movie role in 2008, it triggered a lot of media hype, but she has since bounced back to a healthier weight and discourages anyone from becoming so thin
 
In recent times, "size zero" has become a fashion statement, with women of all ages and sizes flocking slimming clinics to attain their weight goal. What few realise is that there could actually be a serious psychological disturbance behind their efforts.
 
So can this obsession be linked to anorexia? Anorexia, medically termed anorexia nervosa, is a complex psychological disorder that goes beyond the size zero fixation. One may assume that anorexics are giddy-headed, weight-obsessed women who take size consciousness to another extreme. But anorexia is, in fact, a deadly breakdown of logical thinking, finally leading to physical collapse.
 
Psychiatrists describe anorexia as more of a disturbance in the psyche than a physical problem. More than lack of appetite, it's the internal conflict of a disturbed and distorted body image which starts at an early age and later manifests in starving the body.
 
According to Dr Parul Tank, consulting psychiatrist at Godrej and Wockhardt hospitals, "Anorexic girls usually have personality problems and face tremendous pressure from their family environments too."
 
Experts say anorexics typically come from dominating and controlling families, mostly with overbearing mothers. But it is hard to tell whether the mothers develop such a nature as a response to the self-starvation of their daughters.
 
Anorexia usually starts off with the desire to look super-slim and the tremendous pressure among young girls to fit into their peer group obsessed with looks and glamour.
 
Also, once an anorexic moves into this cycle, it's easy to maintain it. They will either eat less or purge all of what they eat from their body forcibly. The various slimming options easily available in the market make losing weight much easier too.

Four thousand five hundred semi-literate dabbawalas collect and deliver 175,000 packages within hours. What should we learn from this unique, simple and highly efficient 120-year-old logistics system?
 
Hungry kya? What would you like: pizza from the local Domino's (30 minute delivery) or a fresh, hot meal from home? Most managers don't have a choice. It's either a packed lunch or junk food grabbed from a fast food outlet. Unless you live in Mumbai , that is, where a small army of 'dabbawalas' picks up 175,000 lunches from homes and delivers them to harried students, managers and workers on every working day. At your desk. 12.30 pm on the dot. Served hot, of course. And now you can even order through the Internet.
 
The Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Association is a streamlined 120-year-old organisation with 4,500 semi-literate members providing a quality door-to-door service to a large and loyal customer base.
 
Though the work sounds simple, it is actually a highly specialized trade that is over a century old and which has become integral to Mumbai's culture.

The dabbawala originated when a person named Mahadeo Havaji Bachche started the lunch delivery service with about 100 men.Nowadays, Indian businessmen are the main customers for the dabbawalas, and the service often includes cooking as well as delivery.

 Economic analysis:
Everyone who works within this system is treated as an equal. Regardless of a dabbawala's function, everyone gets paid about two to four thousand rupees per month (around 25-50 British pounds or 40-80 US dollars).

More than 175,000 or 200,000 lunches get moved every day by an estimated 4,500 to 5,000 dabbawalas, all with an extremely small nominal fee and with utmost punctuality. According to a recent survey, there is only one mistake in every 6,000,000 deliveries.

After the customer leaves for work, her lunch is packed into a tiffin provided by the dabbawala. A color-coded notation on the handle identifies its owner and destination. Once the dabbawala has picked up the tiffin, he moves fast using a combination of bicycles, trains and his two feet.

Team work

The entire system depends on teamwork and meticulous timing. Tiffins are collected from homes between 7.00 am and 9.00 am, and taken to the nearest railway station. At various intermediary stations, they are hauled onto platforms and sorted out for area-wise distribution, so that a single tiffin could change hands three to four times in the course of its daily journey.

Indian food in America is having its “Slumdog Millionaire” moment.

Supermarket shelves are lined with chutneys, pickles and sauces and all manner of boxed heat-and-serve Indian meals. The quality and number of Indian restaurants has soared, offering an alternative to cheap all-you-can-eat buffets. And a flurry of new cookbooks is introducing home cooks to subtle regional differences in Indian cuisine shaped by climate, geography, religion and caste.

In Chicago, Indian businessman Vijay Puniani is betting Indian food will be the next big thing. After studying the success of Chipotle, Puniani opened the first in what he says will be a chain of “fast-casual” Indian restaurants modeled after the popular Mexican eatery.

Chutney Joe’s, which opened in downtown Chicago in February 2009, features the sleek, minimalist decor of Chipotle — warmed up with orange walls — and a similarly simple menu. For $5.99, diners choose one of four meat or four vegetarian entrees accompanied by rice or the thin flatbread naan. Condiments to spice up or cool down the dishes are free.
